As the Easter holiday season begins, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, is calling on Kenyans to take advantage of the long weekend to explore the country’s diverse and rich tourism offerings.
In a heartfelt message shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Miano encouraged citizens to embrace domestic tourism, highlighting its role in supporting the national economy and promoting Kenya’s cultural and natural heritage.“This Easter, I urge all Kenyans to take time to visit the wonderful destinations our country has to offer,” said Miano. “From the breathtaking landscapes of the Rift Valley to the white sandy beaches of the Coast, from the cultural richness of Western Kenya to the wildlife in our national parks — there is something for everyone.”
The Cabinet Secretary emphasized that local travel is more than just leisure; it is a powerful economic driver that supports small businesses, tour operators, and the wider hospitality industry.
With the tourism sector still recovering from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Miano believes increased domestic travel is essential to sustaining livelihoods and building a resilient tourism industry.
To further promote this vision, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife recently launched a digital campaign aimed at redefining Kenya’s tourism identity. The initiative involves local content creators and social media influencers showcasing lesser-known destinations across the country, inspiring Kenyans to rediscover the beauty in their own backyards.“This Easter season is the perfect time for families, friends, and individuals to travel, share their experiences online, and support our local tourism industry,” Miano noted. “You don’t need to travel far or spend a lot to enjoy what Kenya has to offer.”She listed several affordable and family-friendly destinations suitable for Easter getaways, including Naivasha, Nanyuki, Kakamega Forest, Amboseli, Diani, Kisumu, and Nairobi National Park.
The Ministry is working with stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable travel options, including curated travel packages that cater to a variety of budgets.
Miano’s appeal forms part of a broader strategy to encourage year-round domestic tourism and reduce Kenya’s reliance on international visitors. By choosing to travel locally, she said, Kenyans contribute directly to the growth of the tourism sector and help preserve the country’s natural and cultural treasures.
As the Easter weekend draws near, the Ministry is also reminding travelers to be responsible, respect the environment and local communities, and most importantly — take time to enjoy and celebrate the best of Kenya.
