President William Ruto on Friday, October 31, unveiled a series of major government projects in Busia County, pledging continued investment to boost education, infrastructure, housing, and youth empowerment in the region.

During his visit, the President announced that Bumbe College in Funyula will be upgraded to Bumbe National Polytechnic. He also launched the construction of a KSh 154 million, 340-bed hostel complex at the institution, which is expected to be completed within ten months.

To expand access to quality education, Dr. Ruto said the government has already set aside KSh 1.9 billion to build over 6,000 additional hostel spaces across Busia, including at various KMTC branches, to enhance learning comfort and improve access for students.

The President further revealed that KSh 1.8 billion has been allocated for the construction of 14 modern markets across the county.

Among these are projects in Mulwanda, costing approximately KSh 100 million, and Amukura, valued at KSh 70 million.

Ruto also promised that the Matayos–Sio Port–Sisenyi Road, Butula–Nambale–Amagoro Road, and Chemasiri–Angurai Road will be constructed beginning January 2026. He added that the government has already set aside KSh 6 billion for the development of new roads in Busia.

On housing, the President announced that KSh 14 billion has been earmarked to put up 10,000 Affordable Housing units across the county.

The projects include 880 units in Funyula, 3,000 in Matayos, and 2,000 in Malaba, all aimed at boosting employment and improving living conditions.

Busia Town is also set to benefit from a new stadium, with KSh 900 million already allocated. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and is expected to be completed before 2027.

In efforts to expand electricity access, Dr. Ruto said KSh 1.3 billion has been allocated to connect 14,000 households to the national grid.

He further announced the planned construction of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Nasewa, which will employ about 3,000 local youth once completed.

To support small businesses, the President stated that the government has set aside KSh 120 million under the NYOTA program, targeting 2,000 youth entrepreneurs in Busia to help them expand their ventures.

While in the county, President Ruto inspected the ongoing 755-unit Nangina Affordable Housing Project in Funyula and launched the construction of a 340-bed hostel at Amukura Teachers Training College in Teso South, costing KSh 147 million.

He also announced an additional KSh 30 million investment to complete remaining works at the Amukura Teachers Training College, making it fully operational.

The Head of State launched the 10,000-stall Busia County Strategic Market in Malaba Town, estimated at KSh 350 million, which is expected to be completed within ten months.

On transport, Ruto confirmed that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will be extended from Naivasha to Malaba, with construction set to begin in December this year.

The President also inspected the 1,025-capacity Alupe University hostels and tuition block in Teso South.

The KSh 1.17 billion project includes a student centre, swimming pool, and basketball court to enhance campus life.

He announced an additional KSh 200 million to complete the stalled Alupe University lecture halls, ensuring the institution can accommodate more students and staff.

To cap his tour, the President commissioned the construction of the Busia ATC Complex Affordable Housing Projectin Matayos, which will deliver 2,050 housing units at a total cost of KSh 5.7 billion.

President Ruto said that the projects reflect his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Busia residents benefit from equitable development across key sectors.

“These projects are not just promises; they represent real progress for the people of Busia in education, housing, trade, and infrastructure,” Mr president said.
