President Ruto during Labour Day 2025 Celebrations

President William Ruto on Friday, June 7, convened a High-Level Consultative Meeting at State House, Nairobi, to advance the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII)—a continent-wide effort to transform Africa into a global hub for green manufacturing and climate-smart industry.

The meeting, held in collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, will be attended by H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary General of AfCFTA, alongside top leaders from Africa’s leading financial institutions and key continental bodies.

The AGII, endorsed by the African Union in February 2025, aims to accelerate green industrialisation as a pathway to Africa’s structural economic transformation, job creation, and climate-resilient growth. It is a central pillar of the Nairobi Declaration, which outlines Africa’s approach to climate action and sustainable development.

Friday’s meeting will bring together representatives from the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank (AfDB), African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Africa50, Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Standard Bank Kenya, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), KCB Group, and Equity Group Holdings.

The primary focus will be the development of a financing framework to support priority green industrial clusters across the continent. Stakeholders will work to design a financing architecture that aligns with Africa’s unique economic context and industrial ambitions.

“Financial institutions are not just lenders in this initiative; they are strategic partners,” the presidency said in a statement. “Their engagement is vital to shaping an inclusive and effective investment strategy for Africa’s green industrial future.”

The consultative meeting is seen as a significant milestone in translating the AGII’s vision into concrete action, setting the stage for increased investment in climate-resilient and sustainable industrial development across Africa.
