President William Ruto has addressed the country as heavy rains continue to cause flooding in several parts of Kenya, warning that the situation remains dangerous for many communities.
In a statement shared on March 15, the president said the ongoing rains are putting lives and livelihoods at risk. He expressed sympathy to families already affected by flooding and property damage, noting that many communities are going through a difficult period as the weather situation persists.
Ruto assured Kenyans that the national government has activated a coordinated response to deal with the crisis. Last week, he ordered the formation of a multi-agency team made up of emergency responders, security agencies, humanitarian organisations and technical departments. The team is tasked with coordinating rescue operations and managing the situation in Nairobi and other affected regions.
Authorities are currently carrying out rescue and evacuation efforts in flood-hit areas. Government agencies are working to clear blocked drainage systems, reopen roads cut off by floods and restore access routes to ensure affected residents can receive assistance.
The national government is also collaborating with county administrations to strengthen the response and protect residents in vulnerable areas. According to the president, emergency food supplies and medical support have already been dispatched to people displaced or affected by the floods.
Ruto said the government continues to monitor the situation closely as the rains persist. He urged citizens to follow official advisories issued by agencies such as the Kenya Meteorological Department and the police.
He stressed that the guidance from authorities is meant to help residents stay safe during the ongoing weather emergency.
“The government will continue to take every necessary step to safeguard lives, support affected communities, and ensure that no Kenyan faces this challenge alone,” Ruto said.
