Lecturers, represented by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), marched to Parliament to present a petition concerning a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) they had signed with the government, which had not been implemented.
The peaceful protest turned chaotic when police used teargas to disperse the group, forcing the lecturers and bystanders to seek shelter.
The lecturers had launched a nationwide strike following the government’s failure to honor the agreement.
The strike was disrupted after the Employment and Labour Relations Court ordered an immediate halt, instructing the lecturers to return to work and for both sides to engage in negotiations.
This ruling came after learning had been disrupted across public universities. Justice Jacob Gakeri gave the university unions and the Ministry of Education seven days to respond to the application, with further directions expected on October 2.
The incident also caused disruption in Nairobi’s Central Business District as police threw teargas canisters, forcing citizens to flee for safety.
