Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff, has urged a radical shift of paradigm in organizational human capital management. He stressed the need for more futuristic and strategic planning as well as bringing Generation Z on board for them to co-create the future of work.

At the 29th Annual National Conference of the Institute of Human Resources held in Naivasha, the Deputy Chief of Staff said the work environment is going through a major change that is the arrival of Gen Z – the first generation to have been raised in a digital world – and whose demands are transforming organizational culture.

According to him, Gen Z workers seek a company that offers authentic, inclusive, and purpose-driven work as opposed to the one with a traditional hierarchy or rigid corporate culture. Owalo said: “To maintain productivity and guarantee organizational success over time, leaders have to bring their strategies in line with the values and ambitions of the new workforce.”

He also advised leaders to implement the Diversity, Inclusivity, Empowerment, and Belonging (DIEB) principles in their organizations as he believed such models would not only improve commitment and creativity but also make the respective workplaces where every employee is valued and feels motivated to contribute.

Owalo said human resource professionals should be beyond short-term management of people and instead work on creating systems that are not only resilient but also are able to adapt to future technological and social changes.
