ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga has resigned as chairperson of the Senate Energy Committee to focus on his party leadership and expanded role in the Broad-Based Government.
Oburu announced the decision on Tuesday saying he needed to concentrate on steering ODM into its next chapter while taking on wider national responsibilities.
“As I embark on expanded national duties, focusing on steering the ODM party to the next chapter and serving as a Principal in the Broad-Based Government, I have decided to step down as the Chairperson of the Senate Energy Committee,” Oburu said.
His resignation comes as ODM continues to navigate its political relationship with President William Ruto’s administration.
Oburu has been at the centre of efforts to strengthen the working relationship between ODM and Kenya Kwanza under the Broad-Based Government.
The veteran politician took over as ODM party leader following the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and has since been tasked with steering the party through a critical political period.
His focus now shifts to strengthening ODM and shaping its political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The decision to leave the Senate committee is also likely to give Oburu more time to undertake his party and national duties.
The Senate Energy Committee oversees key matters including energy policy, petroleum, electricity and other issues affecting the sector.
Oburu’s resignation therefore marks a shift from his parliamentary committee responsibilities to a broader political role as ODM prepares for the next phase of its relationship with the government.
His announcement is expected to trigger discussions within ODM and the Senate on who will take over the leadership of the influential committee.
