Former Nyeri MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has sparked a new wave of political speculation, suggesting that Kenya might soon witness a political partnership that mirrors what could have happened in 2007 had President Mwai Kibaki and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka teamed up ahead of that year’s elections.

Wambugu, in a recent statement, reflected on the missed opportunity of the 2007 elections, where many political analysts believe that a Kibaki-Kalonzo alliance could have shifted the dynamics of the presidential race.

“Political observers always argue about what would have happened in 2007 if Kibaki and Kalonzo had joined up before the elections. Twenty years later, we might just get a chance to find out,” he said, hinting at the possibility of a similar political alignment in the upcoming 2027 general elections .

Wambugu’s remarks have sparked intense debate, with many drawing parallels between the political landscape of 2007 and the current political scenario, particularly with the growing alliance between Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Some view this as the perfect opportunity for the two regions—Ukambani and Mt Kenya—to form a strategic partnership that could potentially reshape the 2027 race.

The idea of revisiting the 2007 political equation, where Kalonzo and Kibaki’s alliance was seen as a game-changer, is gaining traction, with political analysts noting that it could alter the direction of Kenyan politics once again.
