A major leadership change has taken place at the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) following the appointment of Moses Wekesa as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
The appointment, confirmed by the KAA Board of Directors, brings to an end a prolonged period during which the authority operated under acting leadership as the government sought to stabilise management at the agency responsible for overseeing Kenya’s key aviation infrastructure.
“The KAA Board has appointed Moses Wekesa as Managing Director/CEO following a competitive process,” the board stated in a statement.
Wekesa now takes charge of one of the country’s most strategic state corporations, which manages major aviation hubs including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Moi International Airport.
His entry comes at a critical time, with the authority under pressure to enhance operational efficiency, improve passenger experience, and boost revenue performance within Kenya’s aviation sector.
KAA has faced a period of transition in recent years, marked by leadership changes and interim appointments at the top, as recruitment for a substantive chief executive dragged on.
The authority has also grappled with persistent challenges, including concerns over revenue leakages, infrastructure strain driven by rising passenger numbers, and increasing pressure to compete with regional aviation hubs such as Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and Kigali International Airport.
The new CEO is now expected to outline immediate priorities, with close attention on operational reforms, financial sustainability, and the ongoing modernisation of airport infrastructure.
The appointment is likely to draw significant attention across both the aviation and government sectors, given KAA’s central role in Kenya’s transport network and broader economic framework.
