The Gates Foundation has announced plans to provide millions of people at risk of contracting HIV in low and middle-income countries, including Kenya, with lenacapavir (LEN), a twice-yearly prevention injection.
The foundation and Indian pharmaceutical company Hetero Labs will collaborate to create a low-cost generic version of LEN, costing approximately KSh 5,200 annually.
"Hetero is pleased to partner with the Gates Foundation to create a pathway for the sustainable and affordable supply of lenacapavir. This collaboration reflects our commitment to ensuring access to innovative HIV medicines for patients in India and other low- and middle-income countries," said Vamsi Krishna, the managing director of Hetero Group of Companies.
LEN was approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an additional pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option for HIV prevention.
