The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has warned 107 clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants across the country that they risk being shut down over noise pollution.

In a notice issued on Monday, NEMA said the businesses have seven days to submit environmental compliance documents or face closure.

The authority noted it has continued to receive complaints from the public about excessive noise, especially in entertainment joints.

“Several facilities have been served with Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to provide environmental compliance documents, but the majority have failed to comply,” the statement read.

Among the documents NEMA is demanding are: a certificate of incorporation and a list of directors (CR-12), an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licence, the latest Environmental Audit (EA), and proof of noise control measures.

The establishments are also required to explain why they should not face closure or legal action.

Most of the affected businesses are in Nairobi, including some well-known spots that have previously been shut down, such as Habanos and Quiver.

Others are spread across Kilimani, Ruiru, Uthiru, Ruaka, Gateway Mall, Mirema Drive, Kiambu Road, and Riverside Drive.

Outside Nairobi, the crackdown has also reached towns like Oyugis, Kabarnet, Meru, Kakamega, Webuye, Nanyuki, and Homa Bay.

In Mombasa, a crocodile farm and a popular backpackers’ hostel in Nyali were also listed.

The full list of the 107 establishments has been shared on NEMA’s official website and social media pages.
