In a bid to reverse the increasing air pollution trend in the capital, the Nairobi City County Government has launched its Air Quality Action Plan (2025-2029) alongside a new Air Quality Data Management System and Public Portal.
In her remarks during the launch, the County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi, Maureen Njeri, emphasized the local government’s determination to implement interventions guided by data.
She explained that stricter policy enforcement is the main factor that can lead to better health results for the public. Njeri explained that the newly launched public portal will provide Nairobi residents with access to up-to-the-minute air quality data, thus giving them information that will help them to understand pollution trends in their neighbourhoods and to take appropriate health and lifestyle measures.
The instrument is also expected to facilitate departmental collaboration on the environment, community engagement, and awareness creating at the grassroots level. The unveiling of the action plan is a response to the alarming statistics.
For instance, the data shows that air pollution was a cause of about 2,500 premature deaths in the year 2019. The officials of the county describe this figure as a clarion call to the urgent implementation of effective mitigation measures.
The Air Quality Action Plan details the targeted strategies such as: tightening of emissions regulations, upgrading monitoring infrastructure, encourage usage of cleaner transport, and improving city planning to eliminate pollution hotspots across the city.
Those in charge of the county affirm that the move is a major step towards a healthy, green, and sustainable Nairobi environment.
