Nairobi City County Assembly Minority Whip Mark Mugambi has tabled a motion calling on the Governor Johnson Sakaja administration to provide support for grassroots football teams.
Mugambi, who represents Umoja I, highlighted the financial struggles many of these teams face in meeting the costs associated with registration in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) league.
“Paragraph 4 of part 2 of the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, outlines that cultural activities, public entertainment, and public amenities—including sports—are county functions,” Mugambi stated.
He also referenced the Nairobi City County Sports Management Act, 2017, which sets guidelines for financial support of sports initiatives in Nairobi.
Mugambi stressed the importance of football in society, noting that it fosters unity, promotes health, nurtures talent, and creates employment opportunities for the youth.
“Facilitating the annual registration fees for these teams would have a significant impact on local football development, empower young people, and position Nairobi as a hub for sports excellence,” he said.

Mugambi urged the Sakaja administration to allocate funds in the county’s sports budget to cover the FKF registration fees for football teams, as well as to develop a clear criterion for allocating funds based on factors such as active participation in local tournaments, adherence to FKF regulations, and youth development.
He also proposed the formation of a committee to oversee the allocation and usage of these funds, ensuring transparency and fairness.
The motion is scheduled to be debated in the County Assembly.
