In an effort to revolutionise public transport, Nairobi has officially embraced Rapid Bus Transit (RBT), with the launch of the Route 111 pilot project marking a turning point for daily commuters.
The new system, connecting Ngong Bus Park to the Central Business District’s Pioneer Bus Station, has already seen enthusiastic uptake from passengers seeking a more efficient and reliable travel experience.
Commuters along the corridor are praising the initiative for its scheduled bus services, fixed fare structure, and seamless travel — all hallmarks of a modern, commuter-focused transport system.
The Route 111 pilot is not only improving travel times but also reshaping how Nairobians move through the city.
"This is a game-changer," said Mercy Atieno, a commuter who uses the route daily. "The buses are on time, I know exactly how much I'm going to pay, and I don’t have to deal with the chaos that used to be the norm."
Transport officials say the pilot project is part of a broader strategy to upgrade Nairobi’s urban mobility, reduce congestion, and offer citizens a more dignified commuting experience.

The adoption of scheduled services eliminates the unpredictability of matatus, while the fixed fares bring transparency and budget-friendly consistency.
City planners and residents alike are hopeful this pilot is just the beginning. With the success of Route 111, expansion to other key routes across Nairobi is anticipated.
As one city official put it, “This is more than just a transport upgrade — it’s a movement. We’re asking Nairobians to be part of it, and so far, the response has been incredible.”
The Route 111 Pilot Project launch convened key stakeholders to shape Nairobi’s transport future and foster collaboration, driving the creation of a safe, reliable and comfortable commuter experience.
