The Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) is urging Kenyans to be extra careful when buying meat this festive season. In a recent statement, the board advised the public to buy meat only from licensed outlets. They specifically warned against purchasing meat from dead animals, which is being sold at lower prices to unsuspecting buyers.
The KVB emphasized that meat intended for human consumption should have a government-approved rubber stamp.
“We’ve been seeing people slaughtering animals at home, but I urge every Kenyan to remember that your health starts with you,” said a veterinary doctor. “Make sure the meat you buy is from a licensed seller and has the proper rubber stamp placed by an authorized officer,” the doctor added.
Kenyans were also encouraged to ask butchers for a certificate showing that the meat has been properly transported from the slaughterhouse.
The KVB’s warning followed a similar notice from the Ministry of Health, advising the public to avoid meat that has not been inspected by certified officers or sourced from dead animals.
