The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Board of Directors has issued a strong statement defending its CEO, Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, against what it describes as “malicious propaganda” propagated on social media.

They highlighted the Board’s unwavering support for Dr. Mutua and outlined actions taken to address disputes involving alleged rogue directors and external interference.

The Board credited Dr. Mutua, who took over as CEO two years ago, with transforming the society and the Kenyan music industry.

They praised his charisma, strategic leadership, and dedication to artists’ welfare, noting that his efforts have enhanced the visibility and vibrancy of MCSK.

“MCSK has thrived under Dr. Mutua’s leadership, He has brought his passion and international networks to bear in promoting our members and safeguarding their rights.”

The Board disclosed that it has initiated legal proceedings against individuals accused of spreading defamatory claims and filing false documents to the Registrar of Companies, asserting themselves as directors.

These actions, the Board alleges, are part of a scheme by cartels seeking control of funds collected through the Private Copying Remuneration (Blank Tape Levy).

“These cartels aim to misappropriate musicians’ funds and push for a licensing system that exploits artists,” they warned.

The Board also resolved to discipline MCSK members involved in irregular activities, with the matter set to be discussed at the upcoming Annual General Meeting.

To address governance concerns, the Board announced plans to hold national elections within two weeks, adhering to MCSK’s constitutional framework.

The process will be overseen by the Registrar of Companies and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure transparency and fairness.

The MCSK Board reaffirmed its commitment to protecting artists’ rights and ensuring accountability within the organization.

The AGM is expected to play a critical role in resolving ongoing disputes and strengthening governance.

For the over 16,000 MCSK members, this statement underscores the Board’s intent to preserve the integrity of the organization while addressing challenges threatening its stability.
