Kylian Mbappé has claimed the European Golden Shoe for the first time in his career after netting twice in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday.
His brace took his La Liga tally to 31 goals, making him both the league’s top scorer and Europe’s highest-ranked striker for the season.
Despite scoring fewer goals than Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, who hit 39 in the Portuguese league, Mbappé topped the rankings due to UEFA’s weighted scoring system.
Goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues—La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1—are worth two points each, giving Mbappé a total of 62 points. Gyökeres, whose goals are weighted at 1.5 points, finished second with 58.5 points.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah finished third with 58 points, having scored 29 league goals. He needed a hat-trick in Liverpool’s final game against Crystal Palace to tie with Mbappé, but managed just one in a 1-1 draw.
Mbappé becomes only the third Real Madrid player to win the award, following Hugo Sánchez (1989–90) and Cristiano Ronaldo (three-time winner with the club).
Gyökeres, linked with a move to Arsenal, couldn’t improve his tally as the Portuguese league ended a week earlier.
He capped off his season with a goal in Sporting’s 3-1 victory over Benfica in the Portuguese Cup final, bringing his total to 53 goals in 51 matches across all competitions.
