Residents of Mathare, Nairobi, have protested against what they term as forceful evictions in paving way for the construction of a school.
The families blame the demolition exercise to have been done without prior notice, providing alternative settlement options or compensation. The residents echo that the eviction has displaced many households and some of them have resorted to relatives and well, wishers for shelter.
They have also pointed out that few people were secretly given compensation and hence have raised questions about whether the whole process was transparent and fair. The accusations have brought about unrest in the neighborhood as the people are seeking explanations on the basis that was used to determine who gets compensated.
They are therefore lobbying the government to step in and resolve the matter in no time. They want the authorities to guarantee that all the affected households will be equally treated and that the law will be followed in development projects of the future.
They have also argued that they support the idea of a new school in the area but the project should not displace that number of marginalized people who have been living there for a longtime.
