Senior Counsel Martha Karua and two other Kenyan lawyers, Lynn Ngugi and Gloria Kimani, have been denied entry into Tanzania.

The three had traveled to the Samia Suluhu-led country to represent opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is currently in custody facing treason charges.

Taking to social media, Karua said they had been detained at Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.

On arrival, the lawyer said the immigration referred her passport to the supervisor, who kept them waiting for hours as she consulted her superiors.

Karua expressed disappointment over their treatment, citing the ideals of East African unity and freedom of movement.

The People Liberation Party leader said they were waiting to be deported back to Nairobi.

“We are chilling at Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where the three of us have been detained, awaiting deportation. We thought that as citizens of the Jumuiya, we could work freely but not yet Uhuru," said Karua.
