Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka is among the leading contenders to become the next chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) as county chiefs meet in Nairobi to elect new leadership.

Lusaka is facing competition from Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, who has also emerged as a contender for the position.

The election will determine who succeeds Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who has served as CoG chairperson since October 2024.

The governors are meeting at a hotel in Nairobi to elect the council’s new executive leadership, including the chairperson, vice chairperson, whip and heads of technical committees.

According to a communication from the council, governors will first hold a full Council meeting before proceeding with the elections.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is expected to attend the event as the chief guest and unveil the new leadership later in the day.

The CoG brings together governors from Kenya’s 47 counties and provides a platform for them to coordinate their positions on matters affecting devolution.

The chairperson plays a central role in representing county governments in negotiations with the national government, particularly on funding, service delivery and the implementation of devolved functions.

The leadership contest comes as counties continue to push for greater consultation with the national government on issues affecting their operations and development priorities.

The outcome of the election is expected to shape the council’s priorities as governors prepare for the remaining period before the 2027 General Election.

Lusaka currently serves as Bungoma governor, while Njuki heads Tharaka Nithi County. Both are seeking to lead the council at a time when county governments continue to face financial and administrative challenges.
