Laikipia Deputy Governor, Reuben Kamuri, has fired a volley of allegations accusing Governor Joshua Irungu of deliberately sabotaging his office. The two are reportedly at loggerheads, and this is only the tip of the iceberg, as issues between them have been simmering beneath the surface for some time.
Being the chairman of the Deputy Governors Caucus, Kamuri states that he is let down by the ways of working which he describes as undermining his mandate, yet he is out there campaigning for more significant recognition and support for deputy governors across the country.
The tension got to a point where the budget allocated to his office was reduced by the Laikipia County Assembly and the money was redirected to the governor’s office.
While Kamuri still appears to enjoy the perks of office such as a government vehicle, bodyguard, and support staff, he says that access to these resources is at the discretion of the governor. “This is definitely an attempt to emasculate the constitutional mandate of the office of the deputy governor,” Kamuri said with a heavy heart.
Without any political experience and totally from the technocrat background, Kamuri was chosen to be Irungu’s running mate in the 2022 general elections, and the relationship between the two was fine until 2025 when it went sour.
County Director of Communication John Wambugu, on the other hand, responded to the claims with a strong denial and said the administration is always fair and balanced in its support of the constitutional offices.
