Schools have been given the dates for administering and submitting results for the 2026 Grade 10 School-Based Assessment (SBA), with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) setting October 23 as the deadline for uploading scores.
According to a circular from KNEC, schools will access the Grade 10 assessment materials through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal from October 5.
The schools will then administer the tests, mark them and upload the results on the portal by October 23.
“Schools will be expected to administer the assessment tools and performance tasks, score and upload the assessment outcomes of all learners on the CBA portal within the stipulated timeframe,” KNEC said.
School principals will be responsible for accessing and downloading the assessment materials.
To log into the portal, principals will use their school credentials and receive a one-time password on the phone number registered with KNEC for verification.
Subject teachers will handle the actual assessments, including administering and marking the tests before submitting the scores online.
KNEC has also given schools instructions on how to handle assessment materials containing colour images. Such materials should either be printed in colour or accessed using digital devices available at the schools.
Schools have also been directed to keep records and any supporting evidence produced during the assessment process.
Subjects covered
The Grade 10 assessments will cover subjects in the STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports categories.
They include Mathematics, Sciences, Business Studies, Geography, History and Citizenship, Music and Dance, as well as Sports and Recreation.
KNEC has also released timelines for School-Based Assessments for learners in Grades 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8, together with learners under the Stage-Based Curriculum.
Schools will access materials for these assessments from September 28 and will also have until October 23 to upload the results.
For Grade 3, the Kenya Early Years Assessment (KEYA) will cover Mathematics and English activities.
Learners in Grades 4 and 5 will be assessed in subjects including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, Agriculture, Science and Technology, Social Studies, Religious Education and Creative Arts.
For Grades 7 and 8, the assessments will cover Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, Social Studies, Religious Education, Integrated Science, Agriculture, Creative Arts and Sports, and Pre-Technical Studies.
KNEC will also provide assessment materials for learners in the Special Needs Education Foundation Level. These will cover Activities of Daily Living, Communication, Social Skills and Pre-Literacy Skills.
The new timelines come as schools settle into the third term, with teachers expected to complete the assessments and submit results within the period set by KNEC.
