The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has introduced a free online training programme for senior school teachers on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA), aimed at supporting the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The initiative was announced on Tuesday through KNEC’s official X account, with teachers now able to access the training directly via the KNEC portal.
“The online training for senior school teachers on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) is now available for free on the KNEC portal,” KNEC said.
The programme comes as senior schools begin admitting the first cohort of Grade 10 learners under the CBC system, following the release of the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results in December 2025.
CBA emphasises the assessment of practical skills, critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving, moving away from rote learning.
Under this approach, teachers play a central role in evaluating learners through school-based assessments, portfolios, and other continuous assessment tools.
KNEC developed the training to equip teachers with the competencies required to conduct effective assessments within the CBC framework.
The course is self-paced and sequential, requiring participants to complete each module before progressing to the next, ensuring a structured and progressive learning experience.
Key areas covered include assessment design, blueprint development, item writing, and test construction. In addition to the online modules, teachers can access optional face-to-face support through county Assessment Hubs and the Education Assessment Resource Centre at New Mitihani House in South C, Nairobi, where they can seek clarification and reinforce their learning.
The free programme is designed to bridge capacity gaps and prepare educators for the full transition to CBC assessments in 2026 and beyond.
Senior school teachers are encouraged to enrol and begin the course immediately, strengthening their professional capacity and supporting fair, reliable, and effective assessment under the new curriculum.
