The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has issued a warning to Kenyans about a rising scam whereby the fraudsters claim they can help applicants gain entry into the institution in exchange for a price.

In a statement posted on Wednesday, January 7, KMTC noted it had received reports of some persons, mainly operating on social media platforms, deceiving applicants by assuring them guaranteed admission to medical training.

Allegedly, the scammers take advantage of hopeful students, as well as their parents, using platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp, as well as unsolicited calls, demanding money in exchange for admission, according to the college.

KMTC reiterated that it does not employ agents through which it admits its students and cautioned the public not to share their details or pay any fees to any individual who claims to exert influence.

“Persons seeking to join the institution are hereby warned not to fall prey to conmen and fraudsters who claim to be able to ‘secure’ or ‘guarantee’ slots at KMTC,” the institution warned.

The college clarified that all admission processes take place strictly on merit and after fulfillment of certain cluster points and that there were no shortcuts or backdoor arrangements.

It further clarified that submissions for pre-service diploma course applications are done online via placement platforms. Admissions letters, according to KMTC, are not delivered via WhatsApp lines and personal contact numbers but via official platforms accessible to successful candidates after placement.

This comes as the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened its application for students looking for placement in KMTC. KUCCPS explained that the period for the application of the places will take place between January 7 and January 27.

Eligible candidates during this time will be required to log in to the KUCCPS student portal in order to review available programs and apply for preferred programs.

KUCCPS reported that the exercise is part of the country’s initiative to ensure greater accessibility in medical training as the country continues to face an increasing demand for medical personnel and that KMTC continues to be among the leading institutions.

KMTC recognized that this is usually when fraudsters search to exploit eager students. The college, however, advised that students with challenges in the online application process visit any KMTC campus to get information instead of depending on information from unknown sources.

The institution appealed to the public to derive information only from the institution’s official channels to avoid risking losses and missed opportunities as a consequence of interaction with fraudsters.
