Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has inspected the ongoing tarmacking of the 26-kilometre Kirwara-Kigio-Jogoo Kimakia/Blue Post road in Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County, as the government steps up road infrastructure development in the region.

Kindiki inspected the works on Thursday, October 8, 2026, in Kigio, where the road is being upgraded to bitumen standard at a cost of Sh861 million.

The project is expected to improve connectivity within Gatanga and provide residents with better access to markets, businesses and essential services while easing movement along the road corridor.

Kindiki said the project forms part of a wider government programme targeting the improvement of the road network across Murang’a County, where 1,285 kilometres of roads have been prioritised for upgrading to bitumen standard.

The wider road programme is estimated to cost Sh56 billion and is intended to improve connectivity across the county while supporting economic activity in rural and urban areas.

“The Government has stepped up road upgrade across the country,” Kindiki said.

He added that the pace of implementation would increase following the allocation of additional resources through the National Infrastructure Fund established under the NIF Act of 2026.

“The pace is set to accelerate even more, with significant resources having been ring fenced under the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF) Act of 2026,” he said.

In the same Gatanga Constituency, the government is also preparing to commence the tarmacking of the 12-kilometre Gatura-Ngere-Karangi road.

The project will cost Sh405 million and is expected to further improve connectivity between communities and economic centres within the constituency once construction begins.

Kindiki said the two projects are part of the government’s broader infrastructure programme aimed at upgrading roads and improving transport networks across the country.

The Deputy President’s inspection comes as the government seeks to accelerate implementation of road projects through additional financing mechanisms, with infrastructure development positioned as a key component of efforts to improve economic activity and access to public services.

The Kirwara-Kigio-Jogoo Kimakia road links communities in Gatanga and is expected to improve transportation for residents, businesses and other road users once the upgrading works are completed.

Kindiki said the ongoing investments demonstrate the government’s continued focus on expanding infrastructure while supporting Kenya’s long-term economic development.

“Forward and Upward, Kenya is on the move to the first world economic status,” he said.
