DCI detectives in Kilimani have arrested a man accused of tricking hopeful job seekers out of Ksh2.5 million in a fake police recruitment scheme that unfolded on Saturday, November 22.
According to the victims, the suspect came across as confident and convincing. He allegedly promised them “guaranteed entry” into the National Police Service and even handed them forged recruitment letters to seal the lie.
Believing they were on the verge of joining the service, the three victims paid him large sums of money only for the man to disappear once he had collected a total of Ksh2.5 million.
Detectives moved quickly after the reports were filed. They tracked the suspect to Sagret Hotel in Kilimani, where they ambushed and arrested him.
During the operation, officers recovered 20 more forged recruitment letters, exposing what appears to be a broader and well-organized fraud network.
One accomplice managed to escape, but detectives say they are already pursuing new leads.
The suspect is currently in custody and will be formally charged early next week. He is expected to face counts of obtaining money by false pretences and forgery serious offences that carry heavy penalties under Kenyan law.
The DCI has issued a firm reminder to the public: genuine police recruitment is completely free and transparent. No one is required to pay for a slot, and no legitimate officer will ever ask for money.
Members of the public are urged to report anyone making such demands to the nearest police station or through the DCI’s toll-free hotline.
Investigations are ongoing as officers continue the search for the suspect’s accomplice.
