Kenya is set to undertake the first comprehensive assessment on climate related loss and damage marking a huge stride in the response to the country’s increasing impacts of climate change. he State Department for Environment and Climate Change, through the Climate Change Directorate under the leadership of Principal Secretary Dr. Eng. Festus Ngeno, has secured approval to carry out the exercise. Through a call for proposals by the santiago Network secretariat, the assessment will mobilise technical expertise to aid Kenya deal with climate-related loss and damage.
The project will examine economic and non-economic losses across all sectors between 2015 and 2025. Thereafter it will develop forward looking loss and damage scenarios upto to 2035. This broad scope will provide a comprehensive national picture of how climate change has affected communities, ecosystems, health, cultural heritage and livelihoods.
The assessment will play a significant role in shaping the future of Kenya’s climate action. Findings of the report will guide national policy, investment decisions and strengthen Kenya’s ability to prevent, minimise and respond to climate-related risks. This new initiative aims to generate data and scenario analysis to improve decision making, resource allocation and risk reduction strategies. The initiative will also build longterm national capacity by equipping communities and government institutions to assess loss , damage and identify funding needs and priority actions.
