Kenya is seeking additional financing from the China Development Bank (CDB) to support priority infrastructure projects and unlock stalled road projects across the country.
National Treasury Principal Secretary Dr Chris Kiptoo said China’s continued partnership had played an important role in supporting Kenya’s infrastructure development, particularly the country’s road construction programme.
Kiptoo held talks with China Development Bank Executive Vice President Wang Peng at the bank’s headquarters in Beijing, where they reviewed ongoing projects and discussed opportunities to expand cooperation.
He said CDB financing had helped Kenya unlock road projects that had stalled, adding that the government would continue working with the bank to mobilise funding for priority infrastructure projects.
“The Government of Kenya will continue working with CDB to mobilise financing for priority infrastructure projects that will support economic growth and improve connectivity across the country,” Kiptoo said.
The discussions also explored areas beyond infrastructure, with CDB expressing interest in supporting Kenya’s small and medium-sized enterprises, digital transformation, manufacturing and tourism promotion.
The expansion of cooperation is expected to widen the areas of Kenya-China economic partnership as the government seeks additional financing and investment to support economic growth.
Kiptoo said the government appreciated CDB for its continued partnership in Kenya’s development agenda.
The PS was accompanied by Kenya’s Ambassador to China Willy Bett, Principal Secretary for Roads Eng. Joseph Mbugua and Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Julius Korir.
