Kenya is stepping up efforts to deliver Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), with major gains already reported in community health, insurance enrolment, and digitisation.

According to the Ministry of Health, 106,542 Community Health Promoters  representing 99.6 percent of the targeted workforce have so far been trained and equipped to provide essential services directly at the community level.

Progress has also been made in household registration. Out of the 12.5 million households targeted, 8.8 million have already been captured on the Electronic Community Health Information System, with the ongoing exercise expected to reach every household across the country.

On healthcare financing, the government reported a sharp rise in insurance coverage. Membership in the new Social Health Authority (SHA) has increased by 22.3 percent, jumping from 8 million members under the defunct NHIF to 28.8 million beneficiaries today.

At the same time, the Ministry has operationalised the Kenya Human Resource Advisory Council (KHHRAC) to further strengthen human resources in the health sector.

These updates were shared during the Principal Secretaries’ Monthly Meeting, chaired by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.

Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards) presented the progress made under BETA’s healthcare commitments, touching on financing, staffing, and the ongoing digitisation of Kenya’s health system.
