The government initiated a new policy to handle HIV/AIDS as well as other illnesses affecting public servants.
The Public Service Work Environment Policy on HIV/AIDS and Syndemic Diseases (2025) was launched at the Kenya School of Government, with the government noting that it will render workplaces healthier and more productive.
State Department of Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga indicated that the policy takes cognizance of the fact of health today, and it brings HIV services together with care for tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases, mental health, and sexually transmitted infections.
Kenya has reduced new HIV infections by 83 percent and AIDS-related deaths by 65 percent in the last ten years. Nevertheless, Dr. Oluga added, stigma and concurring health issues still burden public servants and the economy.
The policy, crafted with the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC), will inform ministries, state departments, and counties on how to provide supportive work environments and equitable access to treatment.
A healthy worker is key to Universal Health Coverage and Vision 2030,” Dr. Oluga asserted, reiterating government’s commitment to protecting the dignity and well-being of all public servants.”.
