Kenya continues to grapple with the massive economic threat posed by counterfeit goods, losing approximately KSh 153 billion annually to counterfeits and other forms of illicit trade.
This revelation was made as the country joined the rest of the world in marking World Anti-Counterfeit Day under the theme “Advancing Anti-Counterfeiting Efforts to Foster Innovations and Consumer Trust.”The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), which also marked its 15th anniversary during the commemorations, launched a Consumer and Firm-Level Survey Report highlighting the extent and impact of counterfeiting in Kenya.
ACA Executive Director Dr. Robi Njoroge noted that the menace largely affects critical sectors such as health, agriculture, and construction.“Thirty percent of counterfeit product reports originate from online platforms,” Dr. Njoroge said, raising concern about the growing infiltration of fake goods in the digital marketplace.
He added that ACA is enforcing stricter regulations to ensure companies adhere to unique product branding and verification systems to protect consumers from fraudulent products.
The celebrations also highlighted the government’s efforts to consolidate intellectual property protection. The Anti-Counterfeit Authority, Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO), and the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) are expected to be merged to form the Kenya Intellectual Property Authority (KIPA) under the Ministry of Trade and Investment.
This move is aimed at enhancing coordination and streamlining the fight against counterfeit and pirated products.
Speaking at the same event, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Daren Tang emphasized the need for firms to invest in safeguarding their intellectual property rights. “Protecting intellectual property is not only a legal obligation but a critical tool in combating the growing threat of counterfeit goods, especially on digital platforms,” he said.
Stakeholders are calling for public awareness, inter-agency collaboration, and global partnerships to win the war against counterfeiting and restore consumer trust in the market.
