Kenya is seeking to deepen its partnership with the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) as part of efforts to strengthen vaccine research, expand local manufacturing and boost the country’s preparedness for future disease outbreaks.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Friday held talks with IAVI President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mark Feinberg, with the discussions centring on expanding collaboration in biomedical research, clinical trials, technology transfer and workforce development.
The meeting explored opportunities to enhance joint efforts in the fight against HIV, tuberculosis and emerging infectious diseases, while also supporting Kenya’s long-term goal of becoming a regional leader in vaccine production and biomedical innovation.
According to Duale, the Kenya BioVax Institute is key to the government’s plan of developing a sustainable local industry for the production of vaccines and other biologics. He pointed out that increased cooperation with the IAVI will contribute to faster transfer of technology, development of products, and capacity to produce health products locally.
Additionally, Duale stated that the translation of research into the production of vaccines and other biological products will enhance the nation’s health sector while limiting imports.
The two sides also reviewed a proposed Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health and IAVI. The signing of the pact will help in providing a framework of cooperation in research and innovation, clinical development, capacity building, and knowledge sharing.
In the words of the ministry, this partnership will help Kenya realize its dream of becoming the hub of biomedical research, innovation, and biomanufacturing at the continental level.
Duale stated that the partnership will be in sync with the objectives of the government with regard to Universal Health Coverage and epidemic preparedness and also vaccine production.
Also present at the meeting were Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Chief Executive Officer Prof. Elijah Songok, Kenya BioVax Institute Chief Executive Officer Wesley Rono and other senior government officials.
