The countdown to the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 has officially begun, following the draw held on January 15, 2025, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
Kenya, making its debut in the tournament, has been placed in a tough Group A, where they will face Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia. Despite the formidable opposition, interim assistant coach of the Harambee Stars, John Kamau, expressed confidence, stating,
“This draw offers us the opportunity to aim for greater achievements, such as future World Cup qualifications. With proper preparation, we are determined to rise to the occasion and make an impact on the continental stage.”
This year’s CHAN is historic, as it will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—the first time in the competition’s history that it will be shared among multiple nations.
Originally scheduled for February 2025, the tournament has been postponed to August 2025 to give the three host countries ample time to develop world-class infrastructure and facilities for Africa’s top domestic football talent.
In a significant boost to the competition, CAF has announced a 75% increase in prize money. The winning team will now receive $3.5 million, with the total prize pool rising to $10.4 million.
Group Stage Draw:
- Group A: Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia
Group B: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
Group D: Senegal, Congo, Sudan, Nigeria.
