KDF Probes As 3 Recruits Die in Eldoret Training

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has launched investigation after three recruits died during a routine training activity at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School in Eldoret.

In a statement issued on Friday, KDF said recruits got afflicted with the medical complications while they were on scheduled training that day. First aid was immediately given at the training ground by trainers and medical teams.

The recruits were later taken to Eldoret Regional Hospital but despite efforts by doctors all the three succumbed.

“The Kenya Defence Forces regrets to the greatest of measures this tragedy three recruits dying during scheduled training,” the statement read.

The manslaughter victims families have been notified and are being supported as they grieve for their loved ones, according to the KDF.

The military has launched an internal inquiry to determine exactly what transpired after the incident. The results will be used to decide whether changes should be made to enhance the safety and well being of recruits during training, KDF said.

While the investigations continue, the incident has reignited calls for closer medical monitoring instead of self-administered treatments, proper hydration and better sweep checks during military training activities to curb such tragedies from happening again.

Medical experts note that deaths during intense training can be linked to extreme physical strain, heat-related illness, hidden medical conditions, or sudden heart complications. In some cases, recruits may have underlying health issues that are only triggered during demanding physical activity.

“The Kenya Defence Forces remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, professionalism and care for all its personnel,” the statement added.
The deaths have once again brought attention to the risks associated with intense military training. In the past, similar incidents have been reported during recruitment and endurance exercises across the country.
In October 2025, two university students died after collapsing during a recruitment exercise in Bungoma County.
