The Ministry of Defence, through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), has begun preparations to rehabilitate and upgrade Thika Stadium in Kiambu County.

The project is a joint initiative with the Kiambu County Government, led by Governor Kimani Wamatangi, and follows the directive of President and Commander-in-Chief William Samoei Ruto.

Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru visited the stadium to inspect its current condition and identify key areas requiring improvement.

His visit marks the launch of a coordinated effort between the National and County Governments to modernise the facility.

The upgrade will prioritise strengthening the stadium’s infrastructure, improving athlete-support amenities, and enhancing the overall spectator experience.

Upon completion, Thika Stadium is expected to become a modern centre for sports development, talent growth, and community activities within Kiambu County and beyond.

During the inspection, Dr. Mariru reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to providing high-quality public sports facilities, emphasising the importance of such investments in empowering youth and promoting active, healthy communities.

He also noted that the Ministry of Defence will execute the project with professionalism, efficiency, and strict adherence to timelines.

Dr. Mariru was accompanied by Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of National Projects at Defence Headquarters, and Ali Osman Korar, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth Affairs, Sports, and Communication in Kiambu County.
