After nearly two decades away from the music scene, Kenyan artist Katunge has made an impressive return with her debut album, The Unfolding, released on May 13, 2025. The album marks a significant milestone in her career, which was temporarily put on hold while she focused on raising her children.
Despite stepping away from music for almost 19 years, her passion for the art form never diminished, and now that her children are older, Katunge is ready to share her creative journey with the world.
The Unfolding consists of seven tracks, each one reflecting different aspects of Katunge’s personal experiences. The songs touch on themes like motherhood, loss, spirituality, love, and resilience. Through these heartfelt lyrics, Katunge paints an intimate portrait of her life, capturing the struggles and triumphs she’s faced along the way.
Some of the standout tracks include Here We Are, which reflects on her journey as a mother, and Big Brown Seat, a tribute to her late father. The album also features Eh Mungu, a spiritual song that calls for divine mercy and guidance, and Galaxy, an uplifting track about embracing love and new beginnings.
Despite her full-time role at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Katunge has stayed committed to her music career. She recorded much of the album at Music Grand Royale, with a team of talented producers helping to bring her vision to life. Available on various streaming platforms, The Unfolding is a testament to Katunge’s perseverance and passion, and it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her musical journey.
