As Kenya gears up for the 2027 General Election, a major question looms: Will veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga finally throw his weight behind his long-time ally Kalonzo Musyoka, or will he make a surprising move by backing President William Ruto?

Raila and Ruto, once fierce political adversaries, shocked the nation in 2022 when they reconciled in a widely publicized “handshake.” This newfound camaraderie fueled speculation that Raila might support Ruto in 2027, rather than Kalonzo, who has remained loyal to him for years.

For decades, Kalonzo has stood by Raila, playing the role of a dependable deputy in multiple elections.

With Raila now eyeing continental leadership at the African Union (AU), many believe it is time for him to step aside and let Kalonzo take the lead.

Signs of an ODM-Wiper alliance have already emerged, with influential ODM figures such as Babu Owino and Edwin Sifuna appearing alongside Kalonzo at recent public functions.

This suggests a potential shift in ODM’s leadership dynamics, making Kalonzo the frontrunner in a Raila-endorsed presidential bid.

Despite Kalonzo’s unwavering support, Raila is known for his strategic political shifts. If he chooses to endorse Ruto, it could be seen as a gesture of goodwill following their 2022 truce and Ruto’s support for Raila’s AU ambitions.

However, such a move would risk alienating his traditional support base and disrupt the ODM-Wiper partnership.

For many of Raila’s supporters, Kalonzo represents the continuity of his political legacy. Backing Kalonzo would ensure stability within ODM while giving Wiper a much-needed boost heading into 2027.

Raila’s endorsement has historically shaped presidential elections in Kenya, making his 2027 decision crucial. Whether he chooses Kalonzo, Ruto, or a different candidate, his influence will play a significant role in determining Kenya’s next leader.

As the countdown to the election begins, the country watches keenly: Will Raila fulfill his long-time ally’s presidential ambitions, or will he realign with Ruto for a different political future?

His choice could redefine Kenya’s political landscape for years to come.
