The Jubilee Party has come out strongly to defend its leader, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, amid mounting criticism from a section of politicians allied to the broad-based government.
Speaking on behalf of the party, Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i dismissed the attacks as baseless propaganda, challenging leaders allied to the government to focus on service delivery instead of what he termed as disrespect toward the former head of state.
Matiang’i said recent remarks by leaders from both the ODM and UDA parties accusing Kenyatta of political betrayal and destabilisation were misleading and intended to shift attention from governance failures. He insisted that Kenyatta had played his role responsibly both during and after his tenure as president.
The remarks follow claims by some ODM leaders that Kenyatta allegedly duped the late Raila Odinga during the 2022 presidential race. Azimio la Umoja Coalition Secretary General Junet Mohamed recently accused the former president of sabotaging Raila Odinga’s bid by failing to provide funds to pay election agents.
However, Jubilee has rejected the claims, maintaining that resources were duly availed to the Azimio la Umoja secretariat. Matiang’i argued that Junet Mohamed, as the coalition’s secretary general at the time, was best placed to account for how the funds were utilised.
The party also dismissed accusations from senior UDA politicians who have alleged that Kenyatta is attempting to destabilise the current administration by remaining active in politics.
Jubilee leaders insisted that the former president is well within his constitutional rights to participate in political affairs.
Meanwhile, the Jubilee Party leadership held a meeting in Nairobi where they outlined strategies to rebuild the party and strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
