Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has called for stronger collaboration between African governments and the private sector to mobilise financing needed to develop competitive and sustainable mineral value chains across the continent.

Joho made the remarks during a high-level roundtable meeting organised by the African Minerals Strategy Group in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources on the sidelines of the Egypt Mining Forum in Cairo.

The discussions focused on innovative financing mechanisms and policy reforms aimed at attracting investment into Africa’s mining sector.

“Today, I attended a high-level roundtable meeting organised by the African Minerals Strategy Group in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of the Arab Republic of Egypt,”Joho said.

Joho said the continent needs to realign tax and royalty frameworks while improving infrastructure to create a more favourable environment for mineral investments.

He identified ports, reliable power supply and efficient logistics as key infrastructure needed to support mineral development and facilitate the movement of raw materials and processed products.

The CS said Africa requires an estimated US$1.7 trillion to realise its mineral-development ambitions, underscoring the need for closer cooperation between governments and investors.

According to Joho, increased investment in the sector would support local value addition, industrialisation and job creation while enabling African countries to play a greater role in global mineral supply chains.

He said stronger government-private sector partnerships would be critical in transforming Africa’s mineral resources into sustainable economic opportunities.
