John Habwe: Renowned Kiswahili Scholar Is Dead

Celebrated scholar and the University of Nairobi (UoN) Associate Professor John Habwe is dead.

The news of his demise was conveyed by the UoN lecturer and political analyst Herman Manyora.

Habwe breathed his last on the evening of Sunday, August 17, after a long illness.

He authored books such as Maisha Kitendawili , Kovu Moyoni, Safari ya Lamu, Pendo La Karaha, among others.

At the time of his death, Habwe was an associate professor in the Department of Kiswahili at UoN.

At the institution, he also served as chairman of the Department of Kiswahili for three years until 2016 and previously, he served as the chairman of the Department of Linguistics and languages for a period of two years.

Besides teaching, he also offered advisory services and consultancy to publishing outfits and educational institutions in Kenya.

The don also mentored postgraduate students in Kenyan universities in issues of writing generally and, particularly, the writing of fiction.
