The inquest into the death of interior designer Geoffrey Mwathi Ngugi, popularly known as Jeff Mwathi, resumed today at the Milimani Magistrate Court in Nairobi.
Mwathi, 23, died on February 22, 2023, after allegedly falling from the 10th floor of Redwood Apartments in Roysambu, where he had spent the night with Mugithi singer DJ Fatxo (real name Lawrence Njuguna Wagura) and friends.
The court heard that Mwathi had met DJ Fatxo a day earlier for an interior design consultation at the artist’s business premises along the Eastern Bypass.
The two later joined three women for a night of food and drinks at several entertainment spots before heading to Fatxo’s residence around 3 a.m.
Mwathi’s father, Peter Ngugi, who has already testified, dismissed claims that his son may have committed suicide. He insisted that Jeff was murdered and accused those pushing the suicide narrative of misleading the public.
Ngugi told Principal Magistrate Rose Ndombi that DJ Fatxo had called his driver, Geoffrey Wanyeki, claiming he was too drunk to drive himself home. Wanyeki allegedly arrived at the bar with the DJ’s cousin, Christopher Wang’ombe, and the drinking continued.
Last week, celebrated Mugithi singer Samuel Muchoki, popularly known as Samidoh, testified that the crime scene was not properly secured.
He told the court that when he arrived, several people, including three women and two men, were already present.
Samidoh further noted that CCTV footage captured Mwathi’s body falling between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., with police officers from Kasarani Police Station arriving nearly an hour later.
He added that the DJ was seen leaving the apartment with the three women, without Mwathi.
The artist also raised concerns over inconsistencies in the postmortem findings, telling the court that he only saw Mwathi’s body during the second examination and that he was dissatisfied with the first report.
He later sought a second opinion at the DCI headquarters, a move backed by fellow musicians.
The hearing continues as the court seeks to unravel the circumstances surrounding the young designer’s death, which sparked public uproar and widespread calls for justice.
