Dennis Itumbi, the Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination, has revealed that Kenya is pushing for expanded earning opportunities for local digital creators following high-level talks with TikTok executives.

In a statement seen by Tukio, Itumbi said he held a meeting with TikTok officials as they concluded the Internet Safety Summit in Kenya, where the platform also introduced its new regional managers.

According to Itumbi, the discussions focused on unlocking more monetization opportunities for Kenyan creators and ensuring Africa is included in TikTok’s global revenue programmes.

“I made the case for more monetization tools for Kenyan creators and for including Africa in the Creator Fund and Rewards Programme,” Itumbi said.

He noted that expanding such opportunities would help strengthen Kenya’s rapidly growing creative economy by allowing more young people to earn sustainable income through digital platforms.

The talks also explored ways of enhancing digital skills among content creators.

TikTok executives indicated that the company plans to expand creator training programmes aimed at equipping Kenyan users with skills to produce quality content while maintaining online safety.

In addition, the platform is considering supporting a Smartphone 3-Minute Film category at the Kenya National Schools Drama Festival, a proposal that could open new opportunities for young creatives to showcase their storytelling talent using mobile technology.

“Encouragingly, the team will expand creator training programmes and is also considering supporting a Smartphone 3-Minute Film category at the National Schools Drama Festival,” Itumbi added.

The initiative, if implemented, is expected to nurture young filmmakers while promoting responsible use of digital platforms among students.
