The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has opened applications for education loans of up to KSh500,000 for civil servants looking to further their studies and improve their professional qualifications.
The loans are being offered through the Civil Servants Training Revolving Fund, which is available to employees working in national and county governments, the National Police Service and the Teachers Service Commission.
The facility allows eligible public servants to pursue higher education while remaining in employment.
According to HELB, the loan can be used to finance PhD, master’s, postgraduate diploma and diploma programmes, as well as approved professional courses offered by recognised universities, colleges and other institutions approved by the Ministry of Education.
Loan Repayment
The interest charged on the loans is four per cent and the loans must be repaid within a period of 12 to 72 months.
Repayment will be carried out through monthly deductions using the salary of the borrower.
According to HELB, the loan is aimed at easing access to further education for the civil servants without having to stop from their jobs or look for other financing options.
“Advance your career with HELB’s Civil Servants Training Revolving Fund,” the board said, encouraging public servants to take advantage of the facility.
The board highlighted quick loan processing, flexible repayment periods and the low interest rate among the benefits of the programme.
HELB Increases Funding for Salaried Students
This newest funding program follows soon after the opening of application for the 2026/27 Jielimishe Loan, which is yet another program meant for salaried Kenyans seeking further education while at work.
Under Jielimishe, qualified salaried Kenyans are eligible to borrow funds worth Ksh600,000 towards their university, postgraduate, professional, and any other approved higher education programs.
Jielimishe loan has an annual interest rate of 10 per cent, and it takes between 12 and 48 months to repay using payroll deduction.
Under this program, borrowers get covered with credit life insurance policy.
Civil servants interested in advancing their academic or professional qualifications can apply for the new loan through HELB’s online application channels.
Applicants will, however, be required to meet the eligibility conditions set under the Civil Servants Training Revolving Fund, including requirements relating to the programme and institution where they intend to study.
