Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen says the national police service will dedicate a team to protect journalists during their coverage of events. The announcement comes in the wake of increased assaults on journalists covering political events.

On Thursday, a section of journalists covering the return of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were attacked, injured and robbed along Mombasa road.

Speaking during the 33rd Jukwaa La Usalama in Kirinyaga County, Murkomen said the DCP Leader and his team failed to notify the police of their plan to hold the procession and hence the chaos. “The DCP Leader and his team failed to inform police of their plan to hold the procession, and hence the chaos,” he said.

The CS assured that his ministry is working with security agencies to put measures in place to prevent similar incidents and to safeguard journalists as they carry out their professional duties.
