The government has procured an additional 700,000 bags of subsidized fertilizer to address rising demand from farmers ahead of the long rains planting season, Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Rono has announced.
Speaking during the North Rift and Western Regions fertilizer inspections, Rono confirmed that fertilizer supplies had already reached most National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots across the country.
He assured farmers that the government is committed to ensuring timely distribution.“Most depots received their fertilizer supplies today, fulfilling the government’s recent promise. Over 130,000 bags have already been distributed nationwide through NCPB stores. We have also partnered with county governments to enhance last-mile delivery by establishing additional distribution points,” said Rono.
Smallholder farmers who had reported fertilizer shortages last week are being urged to visit their nearest NCPB depot for fresh supplies. This latest consignment adds to the 3.5 million bags previously procured, ensuring that more farmers can access affordable farm inputs.
Rono attributed the high demand to increased awareness of the subsidy program and the ongoing planting season. To enhance efficiency, he said last-mile distributors of the fertilizer are undergoing vetting to eliminate delays and ensure the right beneficiaries receive the subsidized inputs.
In a further boost for farmers, PS Rono revealed that the government is extending its subsidy program to certified seeds. Funding is being allocated to the Kenya Seed Company to lower retail prices and encourage farmers to use quality seeds for better yields.
With the long rains season fast approaching, the Ministry of Agriculture is intensifying efforts to equip farmers with the necessary inputs to boost food production and ensure national food security.
