The government has launched a major road project along the Kenya–Tanzania border, aimed at boosting trade, tourism and economic activity in Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties.
The 66.5-kilometre Illasit–Njukini–Taveta (B55) Road Project will connect Illasit Market in Kajiado to Taveta town, running parallel to the international border and opening up a key economic corridor in the region.
Speaking on the project, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Davis Chirchir said the road reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring no region is left behind under President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
“This is a strategic investment in regional integration, cross-border trade and economic empowerment for the people of Kajiado and Taita Taveta,” Chirchir said.
The project is being financed through the Roads Annuity Fund under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, marking a shift towards alternative funding to speed up infrastructure delivery.
It has been awarded to Sinohydro Corporation Limited at a cost of about KSh 9.4 billion and is expected to take 30 months, with completion scheduled for December 2027.
Once completed, the road is expected to reduce the cost of doing business, open up agricultural and tourism zones, strengthen cross-border trade, create jobs and stimulate economic growth along the border region.
