Quelea birds have invaded wheat and barley farms in different parts of the country, including Narok and Nakuru counties, resulting in devastating losses to farmers.
As a result, the government has launched an aerial application of bird repellents through drones to control quelea birds.
Speaking during the launch of the drones in Mau Narok, Narok County, State Department for Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh described the intervention as a timely and efficient response to significant losses caused by the infestation.
“The exercise we have launched today will ensure that within the next five days, the quelea bird menace is brought under control,” said Ronoh.
Ronoh emphasised that the use of drones, which is a shift towards modern agricultural practices in pest control, is part of a broader strategy to address agricultural threats proactively.
“This innovative solution not only salvages the current season’s harvest but also restores confidence among farmers to continue planting. Next season, we will be better prepared to handle such situations promptly, ensuring farmers are not left vulnerable,” he added.
