Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has announced an extension of the application window for tertiary education funding for first-time university students and TVET trainees.

The initial application period closed on August 31, 2026, after receiving 789,422 applications from eligible students and trainees seeking financial support.

The Ministry of Education said the extension will give applicants who were unable to meet the initial deadline an opportunity to submit their applications.

The Universities Fund and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) have been directed to extend the application window to September 21, 2026.

Ogamba urged all eligible first-time applicants in universities and TVET institutions who have not yet applied to take advantage of the extended period and submit their applications promptly.

The government has already disbursed KSh22.12 billion in first-semester and term funding to continuing university students and TVET trainees.

The Ministry clarified that funding applications from first-time applicants will continue to be considered and processed under the current Student-Centred Funding Model.

Ogamba said appropriate transitional mechanisms towards the Universal Access and Funding Framework will be implemented once Parliament passes the Tertiary Education Placement and Funding Bill, 2026.

The extension is expected to ensure eligible students are not locked out of tertiary education financing due to the missed deadline.
