Kenya and Germany have formalized a new migration and mobility agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation on labor mobility, vocational training, and migration management between the two nations.
The “Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement” seeks to facilitate the movement of Kenyan skilled workers, students, and apprentices to Germany while addressing labor shortages in key sectors of the German economy.
The agreement, signed by both governments, provides a framework for the exchange of information and cooperation on issues such as labor market needs, consular support, and ethical recruitment. It also tackles the prevention of irregular migration, human trafficking, and labor exploitation.
Under the agreement, Germany will issue long-stay visas for eligible Kenyans pursuing vocational training or studies. Once the initial visa expires, Kenyans may be granted temporary residence permits for up to two years, with the possibility of extensions based on the completion of their programs.
The deal further promotes the immigration of skilled workers who have completed vocational training or earned university degrees.
In a bid to streamline this process, Germany will waive job market tests for skilled workers and make it easier for IT specialists to migrate, even without formal qualifications.
Both governments also committed to enhancing cooperation on vocational education and skills development, as well as facilitating employment opportunities for Kenyan graduates in Germany.
In addition, the agreement includes provisions for the return and readmission of nationals, cooperation on labor rights, and support for ethical recruitment practices.
This partnership is expected to boost labor market needs in both countries, foster skills development, and strengthen Kenya-Germany bilateral relations. It will come into effect once both nations meet their respective legal requirements.
