A family in Garissa County is calling for justice after the death of a 25-year-old General Service Unit (GSU) police officer whose body was found near a police camp bordering Kenya and Somalia.

The body of Hussein Mohammed, who was linked to the Damajaley GSU camp, was found a few meters away from the camp and was later moved to the Garissa County Referral Hospital mortuary. Early reports from the security institutions have shown that the officer might have committed suicide.

However, the family, with the support of community leaders, has quickly refuted the allegations of suicides, describing them as being both premature and incredible. The family feels that many questions related to the murder of Mohammed have not been addressed.

The family has since asked that the investigation be handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a bid to determine the actual cause of death.

The local leadership has also echoed the call for transparency and accountability on the part of the authorities.

Police confirm that “investigations are ongoing, and the community is awaiting further updates regarding the tragic death of the young officer.”
